Where can I park for free in Oslo?
Fee hours, Sundays, holidays and the signs to check.
Short answer
Municipal street parking in Oslo is free outside the fee hours shown on the signs, usually from 20:00 to 09:00, and generally all day on Sundays and public holidays. Motorcycles park free in marked MC areas, and cars with a disabled parking permit park free in municipal spaces. These rules apply to the city's own spaces, not private car parks.
Why
- The City of Oslo states that you may park for free outside fee hours, except in tariff group 2040, which is for vans only.
- In most tariff groups the fee hours are 09:00–20:00, while street parking inside Ring 1 is charged 13:00–20:00 on weekdays and 09:00–20:00 on Saturdays.
- Signs show weekday hours in black, Saturday hours in black in brackets and Sunday and holiday hours in red, and Sunday parking is generally free unless a sign says otherwise.
Details
Public holidays follow Sunday rules, for example 1 January, Easter, 1 May, 17 May, Ascension Day, Whitsun and 25–26 December. Electric and hydrogen vans park free in municipal spaces, but not at charging points. The City of Oslo has an online map of parking spaces that also shows MC and disabled parking.
Tip
Look for a small sign under the P sign: if it shows times, the fee applies only in those hours, and outside them you can park free unless another rule is shown.
What may differ
Private car parks and garages set their own prices and hours, so the city's free periods do not apply there.
Common misconception
Parking is free everywhere in Oslo on Sundays.
What actually happens
Municipal parking is generally free on Sundays, but signs can say otherwise: red numbers on a sign show fee hours that apply on Sundays and public holidays.
