How do I buy a Ruter ticket: in the app, from a machine or at a kiosk?

The Ruter app, kiosks, the online shop and buying on board.

Short answer

You can buy a Ruter ticket in the Ruter app or get a travel card loaded with a ticket at Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Mix kiosks. A new card costs NOK 50. Ruter's list of sales points names no ticket machines. Buses and boats sell single tickets on board for cash, at a higher price; trams and the metro sell none.

Why

  1. In the Ruter app you can plan journeys and buy tickets, paying with a payment card, Vipps or Apple Pay.
  2. Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Mix sell new travel cards with a ticket or travel credit, and a new card costs NOK 50.
  3. Ruter also accepts valid tickets bought in the Brakar, Entur and Vy apps.

Details

You can top up a travel card you already have in Ruter's online shop or at a sales outlet, and Ruter's customer service centre at Jernbanetorget also sells tickets. A single ticket bought on a bus or boat costs adults NOK 20 more and must be paid in cash, with notes no larger than NOK 200.

Tip

Activate the app ticket before the tram or metro arrives: a ticket on your phone is valid for boarding only once its countdown has started.

Common misconception

You can buy a ticket from the driver on Oslo's trams.

What actually happens

Ruter sells no tickets on board trams or the metro. Only buses and boats sell single tickets on board, for cash.
