How does public transport in Oslo work?

Ruter, zones, tickets, the app and changing between modes.

Short answer

Public transport in Oslo is organised by Ruter, and one ticket covers buses, trams, the metro and ferries, plus Vy trains within the zones you pay for. Oslo is in zone 1, where a single adult ticket costs NOK 46 and lasts 60 minutes, with changes allowed. Buy it in the Ruter app before you board.

Why

  1. Ruter tickets can be used on Ruter's buses, trams, metro and ferries and on Vy's trains in Oslo and Akershus.
  2. Ruter publishes timetables and line maps for five metro lines (1–5) and six tram lines (12, 13, 15, 17, 18 and 19), both day and night.
  3. A single ticket for one zone lasts 60 minutes from activation, and you can change to other modes within your zones while it is valid.

Details

The Ruter app plans journeys, shows real-time departures and sells tickets, and you can pay with a payment card, Vipps or Apple Pay. An electronic ticket must be activated before you board or enter a ticket inspection zone. Trams and the metro sell no tickets on board, while buses and boats sell single tickets for cash at a higher price.

Tip

Let the journey planner work out the zones: enter where you travel from and to, and Ruter calculates them for you.

What may differ

No Ruter tickets are valid on Flytoget, the airport express train, which sells its own tickets.
