How do I take the ferry to the islands in the Oslofjord?

Island lines B1 and B2, the departure pier, tickets and seasons.

Short answer

Ruter's island ferries leave from City Hall Pier 4 (Rådhusbrygge 4) in central Oslo, and every Ruter ticket is valid on board. Line B1 runs all year to Hovedøya, Bleikøya, Gressholmen, Lindøya and Nakholmen, and B2 adds trips from June to August. Tickets are not sold on the islands, so buy them in the Ruter app.

Why

  1. VisitOSLO lists line B1 as sailing Hovedøya, Bleikøya, Gressholmen, Lindøya øst, Lindøya vest, Nakholmen and back to Hovedøya all year.
  2. Line B2 calls only at Hovedøya, Lindøya vest and Nakholmen, and runs from June to August.
  3. In summer the ferries run from early morning until late at night, while in winter there are only 7–8 departures a day.

Details

All Ruter tickets are valid on the island ferries, including the cheapest single ticket for one zone: NOK 46 for an adult and NOK 19 for children aged 6–17, while children under 6 travel free. A single ticket lasts 60 minutes from activation, and you can change to a tram, bus or the metro within that time.

Tip

Buy the ticket for the trip back in the Ruter app too, because tickets are not sold on the islands and a single ticket runs out after 60 minutes.

What may differ

Outside summer the service is much thinner: B2 does not run, and B1 has only 7–8 departures a day in winter, so check the time of the last boat back.
