Can I pay with cash or a bank card on buses in Norway?

On-board payment rules in Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Bus payment varies by city: Oslo's Ruter buses sell single tickets on board for cash only, while Skyss buses in Bergen accept cash and bank cards. In Trondheim, AtB sells tickets in its app, at kiosks and from ticket machines. Buying in the local operator's app before boarding works in all three cities, and in Oslo it is cheaper.

Why

  1. Ruter sells single tickets on buses and boats for cash only, does not accept notes larger than NOK 200 and adds NOK 20 for adults.
  2. Skyss in Bergen sells single and 24-hour tickets on its buses for cash or Visa, Mastercard and Maestro cards, but sells no tickets on board the Bergen Light Rail.
  3. AtB sells tickets in its app (Vipps or card), at shops such as Coop, Narvesen and 7-Eleven in Trondheim, and from ticket machines that take card or cash.

Details

Trams and the metro in Oslo sell no tickets on board. Since April 2026, AtB has been testing cash-free buses on selected rural lines in Trøndelag, where you pay with the app, an SMS ticket, the t:card travel card or a bank card. In Oslo you can also buy valid Ruter tickets in the Entur and Vy apps.

Tip

Download the local app before you arrive, such as Ruter in Oslo, Skyss in Bergen or AtB in Trondheim, and buy the ticket before you board.

What may differ

Rules differ between transport companies and can change, so check the company for the area you travel in.

Common misconception

You can pay by card on any bus in Norway.

What actually happens

Ruter buses in Oslo take only cash for tickets bought on board, so in Oslo you pay by card in the app, not to the driver.
