Can I use a Ruter ticket on Vy trains in the Oslo area?
Where Ruter tickets work on trains and where Vy tickets stop working.
Short answer
Ruter tickets are valid on Vy trains within Oslo and Akershus, as long as the ticket covers all the zones you travel through. Vy's own train tickets for trips beyond Oslo and Akershus are not valid on Ruter buses, trams or the metro. A Ruter ticket bought in the Vy app works like any other Ruter ticket.
Why
- Ruter states that inside Oslo and Akershus you may use all its ordinary tickets on Vy trains in the zones you travel through.
- Outside Oslo and Akershus the train operator's own tickets and prices apply, and Ruter says those tickets are not valid on its services.
- No Ruter tickets are valid on Flytoget, the airport express train, not even period tickets for all zones.
Details
A single Ruter ticket for one zone lasts 60 minutes, plus 30 minutes for each extra zone, and you can change between train, bus, tram and metro within your zones while it is valid. Activate the ticket before you board. Ruter tickets can be bought in the Ruter, Vy, Entur and Brakar apps.
Tip
Trains to Asker or Oslo Airport leave zone 1, so choose a ticket for all the zones on your trip before you board.
What may differ
On the Vy express bus VY15, Ruter tickets can be used between Feiring, Gardermoen and Oslo. Flytoget tickets are normally not valid on Ruter's services.
