How do the buses in Tromsø work, and how do I buy a ticket?

Svipper tickets, prices from February 2026 and the app.

Short answer

Tromsø has city buses, and you buy tickets through Svipper, the app for buses and express boats in Troms, where an adult single for one zone costs NOK 50. Children aged 6–17 and seniors from 67 pay NOK 25. Activate the ticket before you board the bus.

Why

  1. Svipper's bus fares from 1 February 2026 set a one-zone single at NOK 50 for adults and NOK 25 for children aged 6–17, seniors from 67 and military personnel.
  2. An off-peak single costs NOK 30, applies only in Tromsø and is valid on weekdays from 09:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 01:00.
  3. A 30-day ticket for Tromsø municipality costs NOK 562 for adults aged 30–66 and NOK 265 for young adults aged 18–29.

Details

Besides the app, Svipper lists travel cards, ticket machines, sales outlets, a webshop, the Entur app and buying on board as ways to get a bus ticket. The app takes Vipps or a payment card and shows departures in real time. You do not need to show your ticket when boarding the city bus in Tromsø, but it must be activated and valid for your zone.

Tip

For a day of sightseeing, the 24-hour ticket at NOK 140 costs less than three adult singles at NOK 50 each.

What may differ

Svipper tickets are not valid on the Airport Express Bus. Children under six travel free with an adult, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays an adult can take up to four children aged 6–17 free within one zone.
