How does public transport in Trondheim work?

AtB zones, single tickets, the app and where to buy.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

In Trondheim, one AtB ticket for zone A covers buses, the tram and local trains, and an adult single ticket costs NOK 50 for 90 minutes. Buy tickets in the AtB app, by SMS to 2027, in shops such as Coop, Narvesen and 7-Eleven, or at ticket machines at selected stops. Children under 6 travel free.

Why

  1. AtB's single ticket for one zone costs NOK 50 for adults and students and NOK 25 for children aged 6–17 and seniors aged 67 and over.
  2. The single ticket is valid for 90 minutes from purchase, and a zone A ticket also lets you take the local train between Lundamo and Skatval.
  3. Tickets bought from the driver or crew cost more, NOK 20 extra for adults, whether you pay in cash or by card.

Details

In the AtB app you pay with Vipps or a payment card, and the ticket machines in zone A take cards or cash but do not give change. The old AtB Mobillett app has been discontinued, so use the AtB app instead. Since April 2026 AtB has been testing cash-free buses on selected lines in Trøndelag, where you can no longer pay cash on board.

Tip

Buy the ticket in the AtB app before you board, since the same ticket bought from the driver costs NOK 20 more for adults.

What may differ

Trips beyond zone A cost more and last longer: a single ticket for bus and tram is valid for 1.5 hours in one zone plus one hour for each extra zone, so check the price for your route in the app.
