Do I need an AutoPASS tag, and how do I get one?
Paying tolls with and without a tag, and who must have one.
Short answer
A private car up to 3,500 kg can use Norwegian toll roads without an AutoPASS tag: the number plate is photographed and an invoice follows. A tag with a user agreement from a toll service provider gives 20 per cent off each crossing. Foreign drivers can also register at Epass24 and drive without a tag, but without a discount.
Why
- AutoPASS is the automated system for collecting road and ferry tolls, owned and operated by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen).
- Vehicles without an agreement are identified by a photo of the number plate, and the invoice comes by post at the regular rate, with no penalty charge, from the toll company that owns the station.
- A tag is compulsory for Norwegian and foreign vehicles over 3,500 kg registered to a business, but not for motorhomes or private vehicles used only for private purposes.
Details
To get a tag, you sign a user agreement with a toll service provider, as only these companies can issue tags. Light foreign vehicles cannot get a tag at the Norwegian border, so order it well before the trip. Without an agreement you may be charged a fee for looking up the owner in your country's vehicle register.
Tip
If you rent a car in Norway, ask the rental company whether the car has a tag and how it passes toll charges on to you.
What may differ
Heavy vehicles over 3,500 kg used for business must have a tag and agreement. In Oslo the 20 per cent discount and the monthly cap are tied to an AutoPASS agreement, while the hour rule applies to everyone.
Common misconception
You have to buy an AutoPASS tag at the border before you can drive on Norwegian toll roads.
What actually happens
Private cars up to 3,500 kg do not need a tag: the plate is photographed and an invoice is sent. Light vehicles cannot even get a tag at the border.
