Which eSIM is best for a trip to Norway?

Norwegian eSIMs, travel eSIMs and EU roaming for visitors.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Telenor and Telia's prepaid service both require BankID to activate an eSIM, so visitors without BankID need a travel eSIM; EU and EEA plans roam in Norway at home prices. Dial *#06# on your phone first: a line called EID means it supports eSIM. Norway has three mobile networks, run by Telenor, Telia and Ice.

Why

  1. Telenor says activating an eSIM requires access to BankID, and Telia requires BankID and a registered owner for an eSIM on its Kontant prepaid card.
  2. EU roaming rules also apply in the EEA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, although operators may limit how much data you use at the domestic price.
  3. Nkom names Ice, Telenor and Telia as the operators with their own mobile networks, and Telenor was the largest mobile provider with a 40.4 per cent share at the end of 2025.

Details

Telenor eSIMs are ordered and activated on Mine Sider or in the Mitt Telenor app, and the QR code is valid for 14 days. Telenor says an eSIM can also be activated from abroad, as long as you can still use BankID. If you have neither BankID nor a Norwegian national identity number, Telia sells its Kontant starter pack in Telia shops.

Tip

Before you buy a travel eSIM, check that the provider lists Norway and that your phone shows an EID line when you dial *#06#.

What may differ

With a plan from an EU or EEA country you can usually keep using it in Norway at home prices, within your operator's fair use limit for data. Plans from the UK, the US and other countries outside the EEA follow your own operator's roaming prices.

Common misconception

EU roaming does not apply in Norway because Norway is not in the EU.

What actually happens

Norway is part of the EEA, and the EU roaming rules apply there too, so plans from EU countries work at domestic prices.
