Is there Wi-Fi on trains, buses and ferries in Norway?

Trains, express buses and Hurtigruten, and where the signal drops.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Vy offers free Wi-Fi on its regional trains and most local trains, Vy Express has free Wi-Fi on most buses, and Hurtigruten has free Wi-Fi on all its ships. The signal can drop in tunnels and deep valleys, and some lines, including the Bergen Line, have no Wi-Fi. Hurtigruten warns that speeds can be low and poorly suited to streaming.

Why

  1. On Vy trains you connect to the Vy-wifi or NSB_Interaktiv network and click Log on, with no registration or password.
  2. Vy says some local trains around Oslo, trains on the Bratsberg Line and trains on the Bergen Line have no internet on board.
  3. Hurtigruten offers free Wi-Fi on all its ships, but guests on Basic fares or port-to-port voyages must join its loyalty programme to use it.

Details

Visit Norway notes that most trains have a charging point next to the seats. On Vy Express, all buses have charging, either USB or a regular socket, and every bus has a toilet. Vy suggests using your own mobile data as a backup where the onboard connection is weak.

Tip

Download films and work documents before you travel, as Vy itself recommends, because the onboard connection is not guaranteed.

What may differ

Other train operators, such as Go-Ahead Nordic, SJ Nord and Flytoget, run their own trains, and Wi-Fi on local car ferries and express boats depends on the company, so check with the operator of your route.
