How do I call the US or other countries from Norway?
International prefix, the US country code and what calls cost.
Short answer
To call another country from Norway, dial the international prefix 00, or + on a mobile, then the country code and the number. For the United States that means 00 1 or +1, followed by the three-digit area code and the seven-digit local number. Telia, for one, charges separate prices for calls from Norway to other countries.
Why
- Nkom's numbering plan sets 00 as Norway's international prefix.
- The North American Numbering Plan, which covers the United States, Canada and several Caribbean countries, has country code 1.
- A US number is a three-digit area code followed by a seven-digit local number, according to the plan's administrator.
Details
Canada shares country code 1 with the US, so you dial the same way. Since 1 July 2019 there has been a price cap on calls and SMS from Norway to other EU and EEA countries, which is separate from the roaming rules. The cap does not cover calls to the US, so check your operator's price list.
Tip
Save international numbers in your phone in the +1 format, so the same entry works whether you call from Norway or from the US.
What may differ
If you keep a US plan, check its own rules: T-Mobile, for example, says Wi-Fi calls from abroad to the US, Canada or Mexico cost nothing.
