Can I get an eSIM from Norwegian operators like Telia or Telenor?

Short answer

Yes, Telia, Telenor and Ice all offer eSIM, but Telenor needs BankID to activate one, and so does Telia for an eSIM on a prepaid card. Telenor says eSIM works with its Telenor Kontant prepaid card, and Ice offers eSIM on its subscriptions. To check your phone, dial *#06#: if you see a line called EID, it supports eSIM.

Why

  1. Telia installs a new eSIM with a QR code, and you receive an email with a link to the code.
  2. Telenor says you can use eSIM with Telenor Kontant, and you order the prepaid card on My Pages or in the Mitt Telenor app.
  3. Ice offers eSIM on subscriptions ordered on ice.no or in the ice app.

Details

An eSIM is locked to the device it was downloaded to, so with Telia you order a new one for a new phone. For an eSIM on a Telia prepaid card, an owner must also be registered on the card in addition to the user details. Telenor says you can also activate an eSIM while abroad, as long as you can still use BankID.

Tip

If you use BankID on your phone, activate the BankID app before you switch: Ice warns that changing SIM, whether plastic or eSIM, removes the SIM-based BankID on mobile.

What may differ

Without BankID you cannot activate a Telenor eSIM or an eSIM on a Telia prepaid card yourself, but you can buy a physical starter pack in a Telia shop.
