What is Wi-Fi calling, and how do I turn it on?
What Wi-Fi calling does, how to switch it on and what it costs.
Short answer
Wi-Fi calling lets your phone make and receive normal calls over Wi-Fi when the mobile signal is weak, and you switch it on in the phone's settings. On an iPhone, Apple's path is Settings, Cellular, Wi-Fi Calling, then Enable. Your operator must support it, and Telenor began rolling it out in 2016 under the name WiFi Voice.
Why
- Apple describes Wi-Fi Calling as a way to make or receive a voice call when you have Wi-Fi but little or no mobile coverage.
- Telenor began rolling out WiFi Voice in June 2016 and said the service was included in the mobile subscription, with no app to download.
- Apple notes that if Wi-Fi Calling is on and there is no mobile service, emergency calls might go over Wi-Fi Calling.
Details
According to Telenor, calls over Wi-Fi use your normal call allowance, just like other calls. On Android phones the menu names differ between manufacturers, so look for Wi-Fi calling in the phone or network settings. If the switch is missing, Apple advises checking that your operator offers the service and that the phone has the latest software.
Tip
Turn on Wi-Fi calling at home if your flat or cabin has weak mobile coverage but a stable Wi-Fi network.
What may differ
With a foreign SIM card, your home operator decides whether Wi-Fi calling works abroad and what it costs. T-Mobile in the US, for example, says there is no charge for Wi-Fi calls from abroad to the US, Canada or Mexico.
