How do I get internet at a cabin (hytte) in Norway?
Mobile broadband, fixed wireless and satellite for the hytte.
Short answer
You can get internet at a Norwegian cabin with a 4G or 5G router from Ice or Telia, or with Starlink satellite internet, which covers the whole country. Ice's mobile broadband starts at NOK 199 a month for 10 GB, while Telia's fixed wireless broadband has unlimited data.
Why
- Ice says you can take its 5G router to the cabin, and when your data runs out the speed drops to 128 kbit/s instead of costing extra.
- Telia's Trådløst Bredbånd comes with a 5G antenna and only works where the property is close enough to a mobile base station.
- Nkom reports that Starlink's low-orbit satellite internet became available across Norway towards the end of 2022.
Details
Ice's mobile broadband runs from 10 GB for NOK 199 to 1,200 GB for NOK 1,199 a month on a 12-month contract, and Ice does not offer unlimited data on this product. Telia's Trådløst Bredbånd costs from NOK 629 a month for the first 12 months at 25 Mbit/s, with a 12-month contract and optional installation for NOK 1,999. Elkjøp sells the Starlink Standard Kit for NOK 3,990, and you need a separate Starlink subscription.
Tip
Check coverage at the cabin in the operators' coverage maps, place the router high up and close to a window as Ice recommends, and test the signal before you sign a 12-month contract.
What may differ
For a cabin you only use in some seasons, check the pause rules: Ice offers a dormant mode (dvale) at NOK 99 a month for up to six months, but not during the binding period.
