Is there mobile coverage in the mountains, fjords and Lofoten?
Where the signal drops and how to manage without it.
Short answer
Almost all homes in Norway have mobile coverage, but there are gaps in the mountains, especially in national parks, and in parts of the Lofoten mountains. Nkom found that 4G or 5G reached about 84 percent of Norway's area in 2024, including coastal waters. In deep valleys the signal can also be unstable, so download maps before you go.
Why
- The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) says that in many places in the mountains there is poor coverage, especially in the national parks.
- Visit Lofoten warns that there is not mobile coverage everywhere and advises against relying blindly on your phone for navigation or emergencies.
- Nkom's 2024 survey put basic 4G or 5G coverage at about 83.8 percent of Norway's area, a figure that includes sea areas inside the baseline.
Details
DNT recommends charging your phone before the trip and keeping it and any spare battery warm, because cold greatly reduces battery capacity. If you cannot make a call, try sending a text message or move to higher ground. Norsk Luftambulanse says you have a better chance of getting through by calling 112 when coverage is poor.
Tip
Check your route on your operator's coverage map before you go, and download maps for offline use, as Visit Lofoten advises.
