What is the country code for Norway, and how do I call a Norwegian number from abroad?
Country code, dialling from abroad and why there are no area codes.
Short answer
Norway's country code is +47, so from abroad you dial +47 or your country's international prefix and 47, then the eight-digit Norwegian number. Norway has used a closed numbering plan without area codes since 1993, so you always dial all eight digits. On a mobile phone, you can type + instead of the international prefix.
Why
- The ITU has assigned country code 47 to Norway, and the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) manages the numbering plan under it.
- In Nkom's numbering plan ordinary fixed and mobile numbers have eight digits, and the international prefix used in Norway is 00.
- Norway adopted a closed numbering plan on 28 January 1993, so there is no area code or trunk prefix to dial.
Details
Mobile numbers start with 4 or 9 and fixed numbers with 2, 3, 5, 6 or 7, but from abroad you dial them all the same way. From a US mobile, for example, you dial +47 followed by the eight digits. Numbers are often written with spaces, as xx xx xx xx or xxx xx xxx, and you leave the spaces out when dialling.
Tip
Save Norwegian contacts with +47 in front, so the same entry works both in Norway and abroad.
