Short answer

A Norwegian phone number has eight digits, with mobile numbers starting with 4 or 9, and from abroad you add the country code +47 in front. Fixed-line numbers use the series 20–39, 50–57 and 60–79. Mobile numbers are usually written in groups as xxx xx xxx and fixed numbers as xx xx xx xx.

Why

  1. Nkom's numbering plan reserves 40 00 00 00 to 49 99 99 99 and 90 00 00 00 to 99 99 99 99 for eight-digit mobile numbers.
  2. Fixed services use eight-digit numbers in the series starting with 20–39, 50–57 and 60–79, according to Nkom.
  3. Numbers starting with 58 and 59 are reserved for machine-to-machine and Internet of Things use, and the 58 series has 12 digits.

Details

Besides eight-digit numbers there are shorter ones: standard special numbers from 100 to 115, EEA-harmonised six-digit numbers from 116 000 to 116 999, and five-digit numbers from 02000 to 09999. Eight-digit numbers from 800 00 000 to 899 99 999 are special numbers. Norway has had a closed numbering plan without area codes since 1993.

Tip

When you give your Norwegian number to someone abroad, write it as +47 followed by the eight digits, for example +47 xxx xx xxx for a mobile.
