Does my UK phone plan include roaming in Norway?

Brexit rules, examples from UK networks and the £45 data cap.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Many UK plans cover Norway, but free roaming in the EU and EEA is no longer guaranteed for UK customers, so the cost depends on your network and plan. O2 lists Norway in its Europe Zone with up to 25GB at no extra cost, and Vodafone includes Norway in Zone A on all pay monthly plans.

Why

  1. The UK government says surcharge-free roaming in EU and EEA countries is no longer guaranteed, and Norway is part of the EEA.
  2. UK law caps data roaming spending at £45 per monthly billing period unless you choose to spend more, and you get alerts at 80 and 100 percent of your data use.
  3. O2 says everyone can roam in its Europe Zone, which includes Norway, at no extra cost up to 25GB.

Details

Vodafone applies a 25GB roaming fair use policy to all pay monthly plans, and Zone A is also included for pay as you go customers. If your UK allowance is smaller than 25GB, that smaller allowance applies abroad with both O2 and Vodafone. Other networks set their own rules, so look up your plan in your network's app.

Tip

If roaming turns out to be expensive, a Norwegian prepaid SIM is an alternative: Mycall, for example, accepts a passport instead of BankID.

What may differ

Long stays can cost extra: Vodafone may add charges if you roam for more than 62 days, or if you use more abroad than at home over four months.
