Can I watch NRK and other Norwegian streaming services from abroad?
NRK TV and TV 2 Play in the EU/EEA and the rest of the world.
Short answer
You can stream all of NRK TV in other EU/EEA countries if you log in with an NRK profile and confirm with BankID or MinID that you live in Norway. Outside the EU/EEA only a selection of programmes is available, and live broadcasts usually are not. TV 2 Play can only show its content in the EU/EEA.
Why
- NRK says you must log in with an NRK profile to stream all content in NRK TV when you travel in EU/EEA countries.
- NRK marks programmes that are not available outside the EU/EEA and says you usually cannot watch live broadcasts abroad.
- TV 2 says contracts with several rights holders only allow it to show its content in the EU/EEA.
Details
Abroad, news programmes such as Dagsrevyen can still be reached through the programme page, and NRK makes edited versions of some programmes for viewers abroad. NRK keeps a list of programmes open outside the EU/EEA in the 'utland' category on tv.nrk.no. If you use a VPN, NRK asks you to switch it off to get all content, and TV 2 says a VPN does not give access from outside the EU/EEA.
Tip
Set up your NRK profile and confirm that you live in Norway before you leave, so NRK TV works from the first day of the trip.
What may differ
If you move out of Norway, the residence confirmation can be removed. In some Nordic countries, TV distributors offer NRK1 or NRK2 as ordinary channels.
Common misconception
Services that sell NRK channels anywhere in the world are an official way to watch Norwegian TV.
What actually happens
NRK says no distributor outside Norway and the Nordic countries has an agreement with NRK, and calls such services pirate services.
