How do I pay a Norwegian invoice with a KID number from abroad?
IBAN, BIC and where the KID number goes.
Short answer
To pay a Norwegian invoice from abroad, make an international transfer to the payee's IBAN and BIC and enter the KID number as the payment reference. The Norwegian Tax Administration warns that a payment without the KID may not be registered to you. If the invoice shows only a Norwegian account number, ask for the IBAN and BIC.
Why
- The Norwegian Tax Administration's page on its bank accounts tells people paying from abroad to use the IBAN and BIC and to enter the KID number as the reference.
- For claims it collects, the Tax Administration says you must use the complete KID from the payment form, or the payment will not be registered to you.
- A Norwegian IBAN has 15 characters: the letters NO, two check digits and the 11-digit Norwegian account number, according to the SWIFT IBAN registry.
Details
Enter the complete KID exactly as it is printed on the invoice. The BIC depends on the payee's bank, for example DNBANOKKXXX for DNB and NDEANOKK for Nordea. The Tax Administration notes that paying by card may be less expensive than paying from a foreign bank, so check whether the payee offers card payment.
Tip
If the invoice shows only an 11-digit account number, you can convert it to an IBAN with a bank's IBAN calculator, such as the one on SpareBank 1's website.
What may differ
If the invoice is from the Tax Administration and the due date has passed, contact it first, since interest may have been added and the amount may have changed.
