Short answer

Avinor, the state-owned airport company, runs 43 airports in Norway, and the four largest are Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim. A few privately owned airports also have scheduled flights, and Torp near Sandefjord is the largest of them. Oslo Airport handled almost half of all passengers in 2025, and 14 airports had direct flights abroad that year.

Why

  1. Avinor's staff run 43 airports in Norway, and 12 of them are operated together with the Norwegian Armed Forces.
  2. Norwegian airports had 46 million passengers in 2025, and 21.3 million of them travelled to or from another country.
  3. Oslo Airport opened at Gardermoen on 8 October 1998 and is now the hub of the Norwegian airport network.

Details

Only 14 airports had direct international routes in 2025, so a trip abroad from a smaller town often starts with a domestic flight. Oslo Airport has departure gates A to G and six lounges for domestic and international flights. Bergen Airport Flesland, the second of the big four, lies 16 km from Bergen city centre.

Tip

When you book, check the airport code: Oslo Airport is OSL, while TRF is Torp Sandefjord Airport, a separate airport south of Oslo.
