  2. Visit Bergen gives about 11 hours for a route via Stryn and Geiranger and about 14 hours for a route via the Atlantic Road and Ålesund.
  3. Visit Norway bases its driving times on the shortest route on major roads: 7 hours 30 minutes for Bergen-Ålesund and 5 hours 40 minutes for Ålesund-Trondheim.

Details

On the fastest route Visit Bergen suggests stops in Lom, Flåm, Gudvangen and Voss. The coastal route runs past Kristiansund, the Atlantic Road, Molde and Ålesund before it continues via Stryn towards Bergen. In winter snow can cover the mountain roads, and some of the most exposed mountain passages are closed.

Tip

Before you set off, check Statens vegvesen's traffic pages at vegvesen.no/trafikk, which show closed roads, the status of mountain passes and a route planner.

What may differ

From 16 November 2026 the Lærdal Tunnel on the E16 is closed from 18:00 to 06:00 during upgrade work, so plan your timing if your route goes through it.
