How do I travel between Ålesund and Trondheim?

Train via Åndalsnes, bus and fast boat via Kristiansund, coastal ships and the E39.

Short answer

There is no railway in Ålesund, so you travel to Trondheim by car on the E39, by coastal ship, or by bus to Åndalsnes and then train via Dombås. Another option is the FRAM Ekspress bus to Kristiansund and the Kystekspressen boat on to Trondheim. Havila Voyages ships sail north from Ålesund and reach Trondheim the next day.

Why

  1. Fjord Norway says trains run to Åndalsnes from Oslo and Trondheim via Dombås, with a bus connection on to Ålesund.
  2. The Rauma Railway between Åndalsnes and Dombås is 114 km long, takes 1 hour 20 minutes and connects with the Dovre Railway between Oslo and Trondheim.
  3. Kystekspressen route 800 between Kristiansund and Trondheim takes three and a half hours and stops at seven ports on the way.

Details

FRAM Ekspress runs regular buses between Volda, Ørsta, Ålesund, Molde and Kristiansund, and Fjord Norway advises buying tickets before boarding, by card or in the FRAM app. In Trondheim the fast boat uses the express boat terminal near Rockheim, and AtB handles tickets and timetables. Havila's northbound voyage calls at Molde and Kristiansund between Ålesund and Trondheim.

Tip

If you choose the train, check that the FRAM bus from Ålesund fits the train times at Åndalsnes: SJ publishes the train times and FRAM the bus times.
