Short answer

The Oslo to Bergen train is worth it if you have a day to spare, as the line has been voted one of the world's most beautiful train journeys. It takes about seven hours and crosses Hardangervidda, Northern Europe's largest mountain plateau. On the way you pass Geilo, Finse at 1,222 metres and Myrdal, where the Flåm Railway connects.

Why

  1. Visit Norway describes almost 500 kilometres of railway through forested valleys, fjords and Northern Europe's largest mountain plateau.
  2. Finse is the highest station on the line at 1,222 metres above sea level, and the line has close to 200 tunnels, according to Store norske leksikon.
  3. The fastest trains take around 6.5 hours between Oslo and Bergen, on a line that officially opened on 27 November 1909.

Details

Geilo lies midway, about 3.5 hours from either city, and Finse is a small mountain village you can only reach by train. At Myrdal you can change to the Flåm Railway. If you take the night train and do not need your own compartment, you can book a lie-flat seat with the PlusNight ticket.

Tip

Choose a daytime train if the views are the point, and consider breaking the trip at Geilo, Finse or Myrdal.
