Which airport is best for Lofoten: Leknes, Svolvær, Evenes or Bodø?

The four airports compared by flights, distance and onward travel.

Short answer

Leknes and Svolvær airports lie in Lofoten itself, with several Widerøe flights a day from Bodø, while Harstad/Narvik Evenes, 170 km from Svolvær, has direct flights from Oslo all year. From Evenes the drive to Svolvær takes around two and a half hours. From Bodø you can also take the ferry to Moskenes.

Why

  1. Visit Lofoten says Lofoten has three airports and Norway's only commercial helicopter route, which runs from Bodø to Værøy.
  2. Widerøe flies several times a day from Bodø to Svolvær and Leknes, and in the summer season it also has direct flights to Lofoten from Oslo and Bergen.
  3. Norwegian flies daily all year from Oslo to Bodø and to Harstad/Narvik Evenes, and SAS flies from Oslo to Bodø.

Details

The third Lofoten airport is on Røst, with Widerøe flights to Bodø and Svolvær. You can rent a car at both Evenes and Bodø, and the E10 runs 163 km through Lofoten from Fiskebøl to Å. The ferry from Bodø to Moskenes takes about 3.5 hours and carries both cars and foot passengers.

Tip

Compare the total travel time, not only the flight: a direct flight to Evenes still leaves around two and a half hours of driving to Svolvær.

What may differ

Widerøe's direct flights from Oslo and Bergen to Lofoten run only in the summer season. At other times of year, plan for a change in Bodø or a drive from Evenes.
