How do I buy a Flytoget ticket, and can I just tap my bank card at the gate?
How ticketless travel works, what you pay and why you cannot buy on board.
Short answer
You can buy a Flytoget ticket in the Flytoget app, online or from ticket machines, or tap your bank card on the card reader at the station before boarding. At Oslo Airport you must choose your destination on the reader when you tap. You cannot buy a ticket on board, and an adult fare to Oslo S costs NOK 276.
Why
- Flytoget says you can simply tap your card on the card reader at the station before boarding.
- Flytoget's conditions of carriage say customers who are not travelling ticketless must buy their ticket before boarding the train.
- If you do not register your card at the departure station, Flytoget charges the fare for the longest journey available.
Details
Ticketless travel only covers a trip you start right after tapping, and the fare is charged to your payment card. To get a discounted fare when travelling ticketless, you must register a profile and a payment method on Flytoget's digital platform before the trip. Students, young people aged 16–20 and people over 67 pay half price, NOK 138 to Oslo S, and children under 16 travel free with someone over 16.
Tip
If you are entitled to half price, register a profile and card in the Flytoget app before the trip, otherwise tapping your card at the reader charges the full fare.
What may differ
A Flytoget ticket is not valid on other trains, and no Ruter tickets are valid on Flytoget, so a Ruter or Vy ticket does not cover this train.
Common misconception
You can buy a Flytoget ticket from staff on board.
What actually happens
Flytoget's conditions of carriage say you must buy the ticket before boarding, unless you travel ticketless by tapping your card at the station.
