Can I buy a ticket on board the train in Norway?
The NOK 40 surcharge, who is exempt, how to pay on board and the rules on Flytoget.
Short answer
You can usually buy a ticket from the conductor on Vy trains, but it costs NOK 40 extra if you boarded at a station with a ticket machine. You cannot buy tickets in carriages marked 'Ubetjent' or 'Kun gyldig billett', and mobile tickets must be bought and activated before you board. Passengers without a valid ticket pay a fee.
Why
- Vy lists the conductor on board as one of its sales channels, alongside vy.no, the Vy app, ticket machines, staffed stations and customer service.
- Vy charges a NOK 40 surcharge for tickets bought on the train if you boarded at a station with a ticket machine, even if a full train or long queues stopped you from buying first.
- Vy says all types of mobile tickets must be bought and activated before you board, and passengers without a valid ticket get a fee set by the Ministry of Transport.
Details
The surcharge does not apply to seniors, to blind or visually impaired passengers and others who cannot use ticket machines, to children travelling with someone on a senior fare, or to passengers from stations without a ticket machine. On board you can pay by card or with cash in Norwegian kroner. Season tickets and Ruter add-on tickets cannot be bought on the train.
Tip
Buy the ticket in the Vy app before the train arrives: it saves the NOK 40 surcharge and works in carriages where the conductor does not sell tickets.
What may differ
Other operators set their own rules. On Flytoget, the conditions of carriage say you must buy a ticket before boarding unless you travel ticketless by tapping your payment card at the station.
Common misconception
You can always buy a ticket on the train at the normal price.
What actually happens
On Vy trains you pay NOK 40 extra if your station has a ticket machine, and in some carriages you cannot buy a ticket at all.
