Where do I buy train tickets in Norway: Vy, Entur or SJ Nord?
Which app or website sells which trains, surcharges and how to pay less.
Short answer
Entur is often the easiest place to buy train tickets in Norway, as its app and website sell tickets for all services at the operators' own prices. Vy also sells tickets for every service but adds a surcharge on lines it does not run. SJ Nord has no ticket sales of its own, so you buy its tickets through Entur.
Why
- Visit Norway says Entur sells tickets to all services and charges no surcharge, matching the operators' own prices.
- Vy charges no surcharge on the Bergen Line and its other lines, but does on lines such as the Dovre, Rauma and Sørland lines.
- Go-Ahead Nordic, which runs the Sørland, Arendal and Jæren lines, sells tickets on its website and app, but only for its own trains.
Details
Tickets are also sold from machines at most major stations, at ticket counters and on board, but buying on the train costs extra and your seat may already be taken by a reservation. The cheapest option is a low fare ticket, and most of these cannot be refunded. On Flytoget you can simply tap your bank card on the reader at the station before boarding.
Tip
Book a low fare ticket early if your plans are fixed, and choose a flex ticket if they might change, since most of the cheapest tickets are non-refundable.
What may differ
For local trips in Oslo and Akershus, Ruter tickets are also valid on Vy's trains, but no Ruter ticket is valid on Flytoget.
