How much do car ferries in Norway cost?
How fares are set, free routes, discounts and where to check prices.
Short answer
Most Norwegian car ferry fares follow the national AutoPASS fare regulation, so the price depends on the route and your vehicle. The fare for a car with driver rises with the vehicle's length and the length of the crossing. Routes with fewer than 100,000 passengers a year have been free since July 2022, and an AutoPASS tag gives 10% off.
Why
- Store norske leksikon says fares are divided into 10 length groups, from cars up to 6 metres to the longest vehicles over 22 metres.
- Since 1 July 2022, ferry routes with fewer than 100,000 passengers a year have been free, and 16 more routes became free from 16 August 2023.
- The AutoPASS ferry price calculator lists 10% off with an AutoPASS tag and 50% off with a private prepayment agreement.
Details
Statens vegvesen manages the AutoPASS fare regulation for national ferry routes, while county councils set fares on county routes, and most of them use the same regulation. Electric and hydrogen vehicles have their own price table, and fare levels are normally adjusted at New Year. On routes using the AutoPASS fares introduced in 2019 there are no separate passenger fares, and in summer 2026 some counties charged vehicles on otherwise free routes.
Tip
Look up each crossing in the price calculator on autopassferje.no before your trip; you choose the route, travel date and vehicle type there.
What may differ
Electric and hydrogen vehicles are priced from a separate table, and summer fares can apply on some routes that are otherwise free, for example in Møre og Romsdal, Trøndelag, Nordland and Troms.
