Are car ferries in Norway reliable, and what happens if I miss one?
Queues, full ferries, weather and what a missed booking costs.
Short answer
On many of Norway's roughly 130 car ferry routes there is no booking, so if you miss a ferry or it is full, you queue for the next departure. Popular routes can be full in summer, and bad weather can cancel crossings. Where you have booked, arriving after check-in closes can cost you the ticket.
Why
- Statens vegvesen says there are about 130 ferry routes in Norway.
- Visit Norway says popular routes can be full, especially in summer, and recommends arriving early for the busiest ferries, such as Geiranger to Hellesylt, Lauvvik to Lysebotn, Bognes to Lødingen and Bodø to Moskenes.
- Fjord1's terms say you get a full refund if a booked departure is cancelled because of the weather, but other losses are not compensated.
Details
Late arrivals with a booked Fjord1 ticket count as a no-show and get no refund. On the ferry between Bodø and Moskenes, Torghatten says booking is not mandatory, and if a departure is sold out you can still join the regular queue at the dock. Before you set off, the Entur app shows real-time delays where the data is available.
Tip
In summer, arrive early at popular ferries and allow for a missed departure in your plans, especially if you have a booking for a later connection.
What may differ
Booked departures follow their own rules: with a booking between Bodø and Moskenes you must be at the dock at least 45 minutes before departure, while Fjord1 closes check-in for booked tickets 30 minutes before for vehicles and 15 minutes before for foot passengers.
Common misconception
You must book every Norwegian car ferry in advance.
What actually happens
Many routes take no bookings at all, and between Bodø and Moskenes booking is not mandatory; you drive to the quay and wait for a departure with space.
