Can I take my car on Hurtigruten?

Which ships take cars, size limits, booking and loading times.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

You can take a car on Hurtigruten's Original Coastal Express ships for port-to-port trips, but not on its Signature ships or the full 12-day round voyage. Space is limited, so you book the car through Customer Service. Havila also carries cars, but only for the whole stretch between Bergen and Kirkenes, and not electric or hybrid cars.

Why

  1. Hurtigruten says cars are not permitted on its Signature ships MS Trollfjord, MS Finnmarken and MS Midnatsol.
  2. On most Hurtigruten ships the car can be 640–650 cm long and weigh up to 5,000 kg, but MS Vesterålen takes only 540 cm and 2,800 kg.
  3. Havila limits vehicles to 5.1 m in length, 2.25 m in width and 2.1 m in height and does not carry electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles.

Details

Hurtigruten's car deck only opens when the ship is docked, so you cannot reach the car during the voyage. In Bergen you must be ready to drive on board at 18:00, in Trondheim, Bodø, Tromsø and Kirkenes no later than one hour before departure, and in other ports 30 minutes before. At the Geirangerfjord and Hjørundfjord stops guests go ashore by tender boat, so vehicles cannot be taken ashore there.

Tip

Book the car space early: Hurtigruten says there is no guarantee of space if you travel the same day.

What may differ

With an electric car or a hybrid, Havila is not an option, and the size limits differ between Hurtigruten's ships.
