Is train travel in Norway easy with small children?

Family carriages, prams, child fares and baby food on Norwegian trains.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Yes, the long-distance trains on the Bergen, Dovre, Nordland and Sørland lines have family carriages with a play room, which makes trips with small children easier. On Vy trains you can bring one pram per adult for free. With SJ Nord, children under 6 travel free with an adult, but still need a ticket for a seat.

Why

  1. Vy's family carriage on the Bergen Line has a play room for children aged 0–7, and it costs nothing extra with a Lavpris, Flex or Flex Refunderbar ticket.
  2. SJ Nord has family carriages with a play room on the Dovre Line between Oslo and Trondheim and the Nordland Line between Trondheim and Bodø.
  3. SJ Nord gives children aged 6–17 a 50% discount on a Standard Refundable ticket.

Details

Vy says all its trains have pram spaces, and a folded pram can also travel as luggage. The family carriages have changing tables in the toilets. You may bring your own baby food on SJ Nord, and staff on trains with a café can heat it. On SJ Nord night trains, two adults and two children under 6 can share one sleeper compartment.

Tip

Choose Familie as the category when you book the Bergen Line or Go-Ahead's Sørtoget, and reserve a pram space in advance on the Bergen Line.

What may differ

Not every Bergen Line departure has the family carriage: the first train from Bergen and the train leaving Oslo around 14:30 have only a simpler offer for children in carriage 3. Child fares and free ages differ between Vy, SJ Nord and Go-Ahead Nordic.
