Do electric cars pay less on Norwegian ferries?

The rules for zero-emission vehicles, county ferries and the AutoPASS discount.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Yes, on national road ferries an electric car up to 6 metres pays 70 per cent of the fare for a comparable petrol or diesel car. Longer zero-emission vehicles pay 50 per cent. County ferries set their own rules, and a prepaid AutoPASS for ferje agreement gives private customers 50 per cent off on most connections.

Why

  1. Government circular N-2/2023 has set the fares for zero-emission vehicles on national road ferries since 1 March 2024.
  2. In a written answer to Stortinget dated 11 December 2025, the government confirmed that zero-emission vehicles in fare group AP1, up to 6 metres, get 30 per cent off on national road ferries.
  3. For county road ferries the circular leaves it to each county authority to decide whether to keep a 50 per cent rate.

Details

AutoPASS for ferje replaced the old value cards and frequent user cards: you pay in advance against an AutoPASS tag, and each trip is deducted from the balance. Private customers get 50 per cent off and business customers 40 per cent. Some connections in Trøndelag are not included, and the crossing between Moss and Horten needs a separate agreement with Bastø Fosen.

Tip

If you drive a rental electric car, check that it has an AutoPASS tag and ask the rental company how ferry fares are charged to you.

What may differ

County road ferries can have other discounts for electric cars, because each county decides its own rate. Check the price list for your route with the ferry company.
