What does F4 mean on the Oslo to Bergen train?
Line letters on Norwegian trains and the F4 route.
Short answer
F4 is the line number Vy uses for the long-distance train between Oslo S and Bergen, where F stands for fjerntog, Norwegian for long-distance train. Other letters follow the same system: L is a local train, R a regional train and RE a regional express. The F4 crosses the mountains via Geilo, Finse and Myrdal.
Why
- Vy's train facts page says F stands for fjerntog, trains that run on long routes, and gives F4 Oslo to Bergen as the example.
- Vy's F4 timetable lists stops such as Sandvika, Asker, Drammen, Hønefoss, Gol, Geilo, Finse, Myrdal, Voss and Arna before Bergen.
- According to Vy, the train takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours from Oslo to Bergen.
Details
Myrdal is where you change for the Flåm Railway. The current F4 timetable runs from 10 August to 12 December 2026, and a new one applies from 13 December 2026 to 30 April 2027, so check the version for your travel date.
Tip
If you bring a bicycle, reserve a bike space: Vy requires this on long-distance trains.
What may differ
On 15 October 2026 Vy reported an ongoing train drivers' strike, with some local and regional services around Bergen listed as cancelled, so check the Vy journey planner before you travel.
