Is there a ferry from Norway to Iceland?
The route via Denmark and the Faroe Islands, crossing time, season and example prices.
Short answer
There is no direct ferry from Norway to Iceland, but Smyril Line's ship Norröna sails from Hirtshals in Denmark via the Faroe Islands to Seyðisfjörður in east Iceland. From Norway you first take a ferry to Hirtshals, for example with Fjord Line from Bergen, Stavanger or Kristiansand. The crossing from Hirtshals to Iceland takes about 2 days and 16 hours.
Why
- Smyril Line's route to Iceland goes from Hirtshals in Denmark via Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands to Seyðisfjörður in east Iceland.
- Smyril Line says the sailing from Hirtshals to Seyðisfjörður takes about 2 days and 16 hours.
- Smyril Line also called at Bergen in the past, but that stopped after the summer 2008 timetable.
Details
Norröna sails to Iceland once a week from spring until November. In summer it leaves Hirtshals on Tuesdays on a two-night crossing, and in spring and autumn it leaves on Sundays and takes three nights. You can bring your own car or camper, and all passengers must check in at least 1 hour before departure. In October 2026 Smyril Line advertised an April deal from EUR 274 per person return and low-fare dates in May and June from EUR 459 per person, both for travellers with a car or camper.
Tip
Book the leg from Norway to Hirtshals first and leave a margin: Fjord Line sails to Hirtshals from Bergen, Stavanger and Kristiansand, and Norröna's check-in closes 1 hour before departure.
What may differ
The Iceland sailings do not run all year, and the weekday and number of nights depend on the season, so check Smyril Line's sailing schedule for your dates.
Common misconception
You can take the ferry to Iceland straight from Bergen.
What actually happens
Smyril Line stopped calling at Bergen after the summer of 2008. Today Norröna sails from Hirtshals in Denmark, so from Bergen you first take a ferry to Hirtshals.
