How long are the queues for car ferries in Northern Norway in summer?

Waiting times, routes you can and cannot book, and live queue maps.

Short answer

On busy car ferries in Northern Norway you can wait for one or more departures in summer, and between Gryllefjord and Andenes this is common, according to Visit Senja. Where booking is possible, as from Bodø to Moskenes, a reservation secures your place, and Visit Lofoten advises ordering at least one day ahead in summer.

Why

  1. Visit Senja tells travellers to expect long waiting times on the ferry between Gryllefjord and Andenes in the high season, where places cannot be reserved.
  2. Torghatten Nord lets you reserve only part of the capacity from Bodø to Moskenes, and travellers without a booking join the regular queue.
  3. Svipper has shown live queue information for its routes 180 and 181 on kart.svipper.no since 1 July 2026.

Details

Early and late in the season, Visit Senja says arriving 1–2 hours before departure between Gryllefjord and Andenes is usually enough. With a booking from Bodø to Moskenes you must be in the reserved lane 45 minutes before departure. For drivers coming from the south, the ferry from Bognes to Lødingen is the most common way to Lofoten.

Tip

Book the Bodø to Moskenes ferry as soon as your dates are fixed, and on routes you cannot book, arrive early and plan the day so that missing one departure does not ruin it.

What may differ

Queues are shorter outside the peak: Visit Senja notes lighter traffic early and late in the season. The ferry between Gryllefjord and Andenes only runs from mid-May to late September.
