Flytoget or the Vy train: which is the better way from Oslo Airport to the city?

Speed, frequency, fares and which tickets and passes work on each train.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Flytoget leaves every 10 minutes and reaches the city centre in 19 minutes, while Vy trains run about three times an hour and accept the Oslo Pass. An adult Flytoget ticket from Oslo S costs NOK 276, and Ruter tickets are not valid on it. Vy suits you if you already have an Oslo Pass.

Why

  1. Flytoget says it departs every 10 minutes from Oslo Airport and takes 19 minutes to the city centre.
  2. Ruter states that no Ruter tickets are valid on Flytoget, not even period tickets for all zones, while Ruter tickets can be used on Vy trains in Oslo and Akershus.
  3. Visit Oslo says the Oslo Pass is valid on Vy trains but not on Flytoget.

Details

Flytoget charges half price to young people aged 16–20, students and people over 67 with valid ID, and children under 16 travel free with someone over 16. You can buy Flytoget tickets in the app or at machines, or tap your bank card on the reader at the station before boarding. Vy's regional trains through the airport run between Skien and Trondheim via Oslo, and its local trains between Kongsberg and Eidsvoll.

Tip

Check the price for your exact trip in the Ruter or Vy app before you choose, especially if several adults travel together, since each adult pays NOK 276 on Flytoget.

What may differ

On 15 October 2026 Avinor reported that a train drivers' strike was affecting train services to and from the airport, while Flytoget was running as normal, so check Vy's traffic updates first.
