Is Flytoget being merged into Vy or shut down?
The merger, the 2028 plan and what it means for travellers.
Short answer
Flytoget became a subsidiary of Vy in March 2025, but it keeps running under its own brand, just as before, until 2028 at the latest. After that, its departures to Oslo Airport are to be replaced by regional trains open to all passengers. In 2023 the transport minister said the airport's good train service will continue after 2028.
Why
- Vy announced on 31 March 2025 that the general meetings had approved the merger, making Flytoget AS a subsidiary of Vygruppen AS.
- The government decided that Flytoget's service to and from Oslo Airport is to be integrated into ordinary train services from 2028 at the latest.
- The Norwegian Competition Authority closed its review of the merger on 12 February 2025 without stepping in.
Details
Vy says Flytoget's product qualities will be kept as far as possible. In a December 2023 answer to the Storting, the transport minister said all departures in the new regional train service are meant to stop at Lillestrøm, and that travellers between Oslo S and the airport will be able to choose between nine departures an hour.
Tip
Until the change, Ruter tickets are still not valid on Flytoget, so buy a Flytoget ticket or tap your bank card on the reader at the station.
