Can I buy food and drinks on Norwegian trains?

Which trains have a café, where you find vending machines and what you can bring.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Yes, you can buy food on the main long-distance trains, including the café on the Bergen Line and the café car on Go-Ahead's train between Stavanger and Oslo. Many other trains have vending machines with hot drinks and snacks instead. You can always bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks and eat at your seat.

Why

  1. Vy says its café is on the Bergen Line between Oslo and Bergen and is open for the whole journey, also on the night train.
  2. Vy has vending machines on the trains between Drammen and Lillehammer, Skien and Eidsvoll, and Oslo and Gjøvik, and most of them take cards as well as coins.
  3. SJ Nord says the Nordland Line has a cafeteria only on the 07:49 departure from Trondheim and the 12:27 departure from Bodø.

Details

The café on the Bergen Line sells hot and cold dishes, with vegetarian and allergy-friendly options, and the night train has a simpler evening menu. Alcohol bought there must be drunk in the café, not at your seat, and the café seats are for customers who buy something. Go-Ahead's Sørtoget has a café car where you can eat or take food back to your seat.

Tip

When you book with Vy, look for the coffee cup symbol: it marks the trains with a vending machine. On regional trains without one, bring a packed lunch and a thermos.

What may differ

The offer depends on the operator and the departure. On the Røros Line and Trønderbanen, SJ Nord serves only warm drinks on some departures, and Vy says the train between Oslo and Stockholm has a small kiosk instead of a café.
