How many airports does Oslo have, and which one will I land at?

Gardermoen and Torp compared, and how to tell which one your flight uses.

Short answer

Oslo has one main airport, Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL), while the much smaller Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF) also serves the Oslo area, with Ryanair and Wizz Air among its airlines. The airport code on your ticket tells you which one you land at. Torp-Ekspressen takes 1 hour 35 minutes from Torp to central Oslo.

Why

  1. Avinor, the state-owned company that runs Gardermoen, presents it as Oslo Airport (OSL), and Store norske leksikon places it about 50 kilometres north of Oslo.
  2. Torp's own website uses the code TRF, says the airport is close to Oslo and links to airlines such as Ryanair, Wizz Air, Widerøe and Norwegian.
  3. Gardermoen opened on 8 October 1998, the same day the old Oslo airport at Fornebu closed.

Details

Gardermoen is not in Oslo itself: it lies in Ullensaker and Nannestad in Akershus. Torp-Ekspressen runs directly from Torp to Oslo Bus Terminal and leaves 45 minutes after the actual arrival of Ryanair and Wizz Air flights, so it suits passengers on those airlines.

Tip

Check the airport code before you book a cheap fare to "Oslo": TRF means Torp, and the trip into the city takes far longer than from OSL.
