How do I get to Kirkenes?

Flights, coastal ships and roads to the far north-east of Norway.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

You can reach Kirkenes by plane, with several daily flights from Oslo and links to Tromsø and Alta, or on the Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ships. The ships turn back towards Bergen there, and Widerøe, SAS and Norwegian all serve Kirkenes Airport. Long-distance express buses also reach the region, but departures are infrequent.

Why

  1. Visit Norway says Kirkenes Airport has several daily connections to Oslo, as well as connections to Alta and Tromsø.
  2. Visit Norway notes that the Hurtigruten and Havila ships begin their return journey to Bergen in Kirkenes.
  3. Avinor lists Widerøe, SAS and Norwegian at Kirkenes Airport, with an airport bus and the Barents bus linking the airport and town.

Details

From Tromsø you can fly, or board a northbound coastal ship: Hurtigruten and Havila sail all year between Bergen and Kirkenes and call at Tromsø twice daily. Visit Norway describes the roads in the region as high standard and mostly open all year. Another route is to fly from Helsinki to Ivalo in Finland and drive on to Varanger.

Tip

If you plan to travel by bus, check departures well ahead: Visit Norway warns that express buses do not run often, so planning is needed.
