How do I get to the Lofoten Islands?

Flights via Bodø or Evenes, the ferries across Vestfjorden and the road along the E10.

Short answer

You can reach Lofoten by flying to Bodø and continuing by ferry, express boat or Widerøe flight, or by flying to Evenes and driving on the E10. The ferry from Bodø to Moskenes takes about 3.5 hours, and the drive from Evenes to Svolvær around two and a half hours.

Why

  1. Widerøe has several flights a day from Bodø to Svolvær and Leknes, and in summer it flies directly to Lofoten from Oslo and Bergen.
  2. Norwegian and SAS fly from Oslo to Bodø and to Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes, which is 170 km from Svolvær.
  3. The Lofoten islands are linked by bridges and tunnels, and the E10 from Fiskebøl to Å is 163 km long.

Details

Lofoten lies across Vestfjorden from Bodø, and the ferry to Moskenes takes both vehicles and foot passengers. An express boat from Bodø crosses Vestfjorden to Svolvær with stops on the way, and the ferry from Skutvik to Svolvær runs only from 1 June to 31 August. Drivers coming from the south most often take the ferry from Bognes to Lødingen, and you can rent a car at Evenes or in Bodø.

Tip

Allow more time in winter: Visit Lofoten advises longer driving times then, and the ferry to Røst and Værøy does not run every day.

What may differ

Summer gives more options, such as Widerøe's direct flights from Oslo and Bergen and the Skutvik ferry. Coastal ships from Havila and Hurtigruten also call at Stamsund and Svolvær.
