Is the Hurtigruten voyage rough, and is seasickness a problem?
Rough seas, the Stad stretch and how to deal with seasickness.
Short answer
Rough seas can affect comfort on the Hurtigruten coastal voyage, so seasickness tablets are sold on board and prone travellers are advised to bring their own remedy. One well-known exposed stretch is the open sea round Stadlandet, between Bergen and Ålesund, which northbound ships pass at night. Crew members are trained in first aid.
Why
- Hurtigruten's medical and safety page says rough seas or limited visibility may at times affect your comfort and mobility on board.
- Stadlandet, between Bergen and Ålesund, faces the open sea with no archipelago to break the waves, and Store norske leksikon calls it strongly weather-exposed.
- Havila's timetable has northbound ships leaving Bergen at 20:30 and reaching Ålesund at 09:45, so the Stad stretch is sailed during the night.
Details
A ship tunnel past Stad was approved by the Storting in 2021, shelved in October 2025 and approved again in 2026, so ships still sail round the peninsula. Hurtigruten's medical help on board is limited to first aid and emergency assistance. Itineraries and excursions can change at short notice for safety reasons.
Tip
Bring the seasickness remedy you know works for you, as Hurtigruten recommends, and keep it handy for the first night out of Bergen.
What may differ
Conditions vary from day to day, and Hurtigruten notes that the weather on the Norwegian coast can be changeable.
