Can I use an Interrail or Eurail pass in Norway, and do I need seat reservations?

Which trains the pass covers, where you must reserve and how to book.

Short answer

Yes, Interrail passes are valid on the trains of Vy, Go-Ahead Norge and SJ in Norway, but some trains need a paid seat reservation. Vy says reservations are mandatory on the Bergen Line all year, and night trains need a reserved seat or bed. Interrail advises always reserving in Norway, as trains often fill up.

Why

  1. Interrail lists three railway carriers in Norway as included in the pass: Vy, Go-Ahead Norge and SJ.
  2. Vy states that seat reservations are mandatory on the Oslo to Stockholm and Bergen lines all year.
  3. For night trains, Interrail says you must reserve a bed or seat in advance.

Details

Reservations in Norway are made through Entur customer service or at a staffed station, and SJ Norge lets holders of Eurail and Interrail passes reserve seats on its trains via Entur. The Flåm Railway is not covered by the pass, but Interrail pass holders get a 30 per cent discount. Vy charges a NOK 195 booking fee on Interrail passes bought in Norway.

Tip

Reserve seats on long-distance trains as soon as your dates are fixed, since Interrail notes that trains in Norway often get fully booked.

What may differ

Residents of Norway cannot buy a One Country Pass for Norway, and a Global Pass does not cover domestic trips in your country of residence apart from one journey out and one back.
