Can I get around Lofoten by public bus?

Bus routes along the E10, timetables in the Reis app, and when a car helps.

Short answer

Yes, public buses run through Lofoten along the E10 from Svolvær to Leknes and Å, and a daily regional bus links Narvik with Å. Timetables are in the Reis app and the Reis Nordland travel planner, and some routes change between summer and winter. Visit Lofoten also lists rental cars and taxis.

Why

  1. Visit Lofoten says the local bus routes stretch all the way from Narvik in the east to Å in the west.
  2. The Lofoten express bus follows the E10 and stops at places such as Svolvær and Leknes, and from Svolvær public buses continue towards Leknes and Å.
  3. A daily bus from Bodø connects with the Narvik bus in Lødingen, according to Visit Lofoten.

Details

Most of Lofoten is linked by tunnels and bridges, but some places can only be reached by boat. To rent a car you usually have to be at least 19 and have held your licence for a year, and drivers under 25 may pay a young driver surcharge. Visit Lofoten advises booking a taxi in advance.

Tip

Check the valid from and to dates on each timetable, since Visit Lofoten notes that some routes run slightly differently in winter and summer.

What may differ

Places off the E10 and remote islands may need a boat, a taxi or a rental car, as the buses mainly follow the main road.
