How much luggage can I bring on a Norwegian train, and can I take a bike?

Vy's luggage limit, bike tickets and where you must reserve a bike space.

Short answer

On Vy trains you may bring up to three pieces of luggage weighing 30 kg in total, and bikes travel with a bike ticket. On the Bergen Line and the Flåm Railway you must reserve a bike space in advance. On other trains, take the bike to a carriage marked with a bike symbol and buy the ticket on board.

Why

  1. Vy states that you may bring up to three pieces of luggage, such as suitcases, bags and backpacks, with a maximum combined weight of 30 kilograms.
  2. A bike ticket generally costs 50 per cent of an adult single ticket, with a minimum of NOK 27 and a maximum of NOK 275, according to Vy.
  3. Vy says you must reserve a bicycle space in advance on the Bergen Line and the Flåm Railway, while other trains need no reservation.

Details

You must carry your luggage on board yourself and place it by your seat or in the luggage racks, and you cannot buy an extra seat for luggage. Between Oslo and Voss or Bergen, Vy offers a porter service for luggage over the limit. On the Bergen Line in summer, a bike costs a fixed NOK 275 regardless of distance, and onboard staff decide whether there is room for bikes.

Tip

If the Vy journey planner shows a departure as full, choose another one, as Vy cannot guarantee space for your bike.

What may differ

These are Vy's rules: SJ Nord and Go-Ahead run other lines, and Visit Norway advises checking with your train company in advance, as you might need to book space for your gear. Vy recommends reserving a bike space on the Gjøvik Line and between Oslo S, Halden and Gothenburg.
