Does Moss Rygge Airport have passenger flights?

Why civilian traffic stopped, what the airfield is used for now and where to fly instead.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Moss Airport Rygge has had no scheduled passenger flights since civilian traffic ended in 2016, and the airfield is still used as a military air base. In November 2023 Stortinget's transport committee recommended voting down a proposal to reopen it. For flights near Oslo, use Oslo Airport Gardermoen or Sandefjord Airport Torp.

Why

  1. A Stortinget committee report notes that Moss Airport Rygge had 1.9 million passengers in 2013 but was closed in 2016.
  2. The airport said the Norwegian air passenger charge made Rygge uncompetitive, and Ryanair, its largest customer, left.
  3. Plans to reopen the airport in 2021 never materialised, and in November 2023 the committee recommended that a new reopening proposal should not be adopted.

Details

The Royal Norwegian Air Force owns the land and runway and still runs Rygge Air Force Base. From the Moss and Rygge area, Flybussen line FB11 runs from Fredrikstad via Rygge, Mosseporten and Vestby to Oslo Airport. Sandefjord Airport Torp, a much smaller airport than Gardermoen, also serves the Oslo region.

Tip

If you see Oslo Rygge on an old booking or map, check the airport code: Oslo Airport Gardermoen is OSL and Torp is TRF.

Common misconception

Rygge is still one of the Oslo airports for budget flights.

What actually happens

Budget flights at Rygge ended when Ryanair left in 2016. Scheduled flights for the Oslo area now use Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) and Sandefjord Airport Torp (TRF).
