How do sleeping compartments on Norwegian night trains work, and what do they cost?

Beds, privacy, check-in, alternatives and price.

Short answer

A sleeper compartment on Norwegian night trains has two beds and its own sink, and the compartment is booked for you, so you do not share with strangers. On SJ Nord it is an extra charge on top of a Standard ticket, and prices vary with the date and how early you book.

Why

  1. Vy's Sleeper compartments have two beds of 75 x 200 cm, a sink, towels, soap and bottled water, and sleep up to two adults and two children.
  2. SJ Nord's sleeper has two beds and a private sink, with a shared toilet at the end of the carriage, and the compartment is charged on top of a Standard ticket.
  3. Vy's six-berth Rest compartment can be shared with up to five people you travel with, or you can book the entire compartment for yourself.

Details

On Vy's night train between Oslo and Bergen you check in at 22:40, and a wake-up call comes 15 minutes before you must leave the compartment at 06:45. Children under 6 travel free in Vy's sleeping compartments, but pets are not allowed there. PlusNight gives a fully reclining seat in a privacy pod with a blanket, and an ordinary seat is also allowed on the night train.

Tip

Compare Sleeper, Rest, PlusNight and an ordinary seat for your date in the journey planner before deciding, since they are all sold for the same train and prices change with the date.

What may differ

On SJ Nord's trains from Oslo to Trondheim and from Trondheim to Bodø, up to two adults and two children under 6 can share a compartment. Go-Ahead Nordic also has two-bed compartments on its night train, and you decide whether to sleep alone.
