Which night trains run in Norway?
Routes, operators, departure times and sleeping options.
Short answer
Norway's night trains run from Oslo to Bergen with Vy, from Oslo to Trondheim and on to Bodø with SJ Nord, and from Oslo to Stavanger with Go-Ahead Nordic. SJ Nord's night train leaves Oslo at 22:50 and reaches Trondheim at 06:31, and the train from Trondheim to Bodø runs from 23:05 to 09:05. All of them offer sleeping compartments.
Why
- SJ Nord lists its night trains as Oslo 22:50 to Trondheim 06:31, Trondheim 23:17 to Oslo 06:50, Trondheim 23:05 to Bodø 09:05 and Bodø 21:10 to Trondheim 07:14.
- Vy sells Sleeper, Rest and PlusNight tickets on the night train between Oslo and Bergen, with check-in at 22:40 and the compartment available until 06:45.
- Go-Ahead Nordic, which runs the Sørland line between Oslo and Stavanger, offers a night train with private two-bed sleeper compartments, according to Visit Oslo.
Details
The trip from Oslo to Bergen takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours depending on whether you take the day or night train. On Vy's night train you can also sit in an ordinary reclining seat and stay in it until 06:45 at the final stop. The café on SJ Nord's night trains is open around the clock.
Tip
To get from Oslo to Bodø by night train you need two nights, as SJ Nord runs Oslo to Trondheim and Trondheim to Bodø as separate overnight trains, so plan a day in Trondheim in between.
What may differ
Vy's train drivers' strike was still cancelling some Vy trains on 15 October 2026. Cancelled departures do not appear in Vy's journey planner, so check it before you travel.
